Litomyšl Town Council puts a lot of thought into caring for public spaces as well as the town’s nooks and crannies and courtyards. Consequently, between 2016 and 2017, a reconstruction of the building known as the Old Town Hall in the town square was undertaken, during which a revitalization of the premises at the rear of the building was carried out. The intention was to create modern tourist facilities together with other services (showers, left luggage, bicycle parking, etc.).
The town council entrusted the project to the “tried-and-tested” Brno studio Architektonická kancelář Burian-Křivinka, which had already carried out designs for several public spaces in Litomyšl (01-VP4, 01-VP5, 01-VP8, 02-VP1). In applying moderate, relatively inconspicuous design details, the architects civilized the interior block sensitively, whilst restoring its former dignity.
The courtyard was paved with granite fragments of various colours and complemented with simple street furniture from traditional materials (solid wood, metal, glass). A particularly unique element is the minimalist drinking fountain in the form of a grooved stele. The tourist facilities themselves are located at the rear of the tract. The entrance, accessible via a barrier-free ramp, features a subtle glass canopy together with a restrained wall lamp evoking the historic lighting of quiet side-streets.
The entrance gateway at the front of the Old Townhall was also included in the reconstruction project. The gateway leads from the town square to the courtyard and has been fitted with new entrance gates of traditional design.
