The generally perceived centre of the vast sports grounds at Černá hora, whose overall concept was designed by the Architektonická kancelář Burian – Křivinka studio, is the reconstructed athletics stadium with newly-built grandstands designed by the same designers in 2001.
During the extensive reconstruction, a new oval running track with artificial surface (polytan M) was added, the football turf was equipped with an irrigation system, and access paths and roads at the stadium were reconstructed. Furthermore, a shot put circle was built along with columns for flags and an Olympic flame, and new benches and handrails were added.
However, the most significant intervention was the construction of the new grandstand with its unique tent-shaped roof composed of a system of tensioned, woven polyester membranes with a soft, PVC coating on both sides and UV protection. The new, oblong-shaped building, with a seating capacity of 528 and a further 100 places for standing, was built on the grounds where the original, low grandstand had been and as well as providing space for spectators, also provided hygiene facilities (changing rooms and amenities) and operational facilities (refreshment kiosk, umpires' office, storerooms, first aid post, hygiene facilities and a garage for maintenance equipment).
The steel reinforced mass of the shell is complemented by ground-floor, larch wood cladding. The grandstand is accessible via stairways on either side and in the central section of the building where the commentary box and access to the pitch are situated. The grandstand area itself is protected against the elements by a screen of toughened glass. Thanks to the irregular, varied colour scheme of the plastic seats (red, yellow, green) arranged in five rows, the otherwise vast area is visually broken up.
The sports stadium is used for ball sports (football, volleyball) as well as for athletics and physical education for pupils of local schools.
