František Sotona, namesake of a notable Litomyšl doctor from the period of the new Czechoslovakia, had a modest two-storey house built at No. 637, near the main road to Svitavy. The building is a testimony to the superior work of the builder Jan Maizl, whose design style was influenced by the recently finished modern Masaryk Polytechnic School designed by Karel Tymich (04-659).
The architect Majzl was inspired by Tymich's purist school building in implementing such elements as the pure, right-angle and linear shapes stripped of any ornamentation, with brick facings and a flat roof. Thus, he created one of the first private homes in Litomyšl with such a sober, Modernist appearance. Hitherto, most homes built in the 1930 were of a traditional design with pitched or hipped roofs. Sotona's house was designed as a “two-generation” one, each floor with one modest flat, comprising one room and a kitchen.
The original, fresh design of the house is still apparent today but is however, as the peeling facade suggests, in need of a sensitive renovation.
