The A5 apartment block designed by the architect Josef Pleskot is the final undertaking in the first construction phase of the U Nemocnice housing estate. The resulting living space of high merit, with its high standard of architecture and urban planning, contains a total of 174 flats (the A5 block contains 28 flats, two of which are specifically designated for inhabitants with disabilities).
The longitudinal A5 building with its relatively modest facade conforms to the conditions of the sloping terrain: the entrance tract, partially set into the terrain, is set back from the line of the street, thus creating a covered “arcade” for parking. The second floor (first floor of the living quarters) is sub-divided towards the street with regularly spaced oblong windows and, towards the slope, links up to the natural height of the terrain via a small garden. The third floor is set back from the second one towards the slope – thus creating space for terraces whose rear overhangs partially shade the small gardens of the lower flats.
The well thought out mass of the building enables easy access to the outdoor environment and fulfils the requirements for high standards of housing.
