After 1952, when the expansive Vertex glass-fibre factory was based in Litomyšl, the character of the hitherto non-industrial town changed significantly. The arrival of new inhabitants/employees, requiring adequate housing, necessitated the construction of vast housing estates which, with their dimensions and composition, contrasted unfavourably with the historical architecture. In 1981, the construction of the main road cutting the town in two was a massive blow for the urban layout of the town, and that, in spite of the fact that the town centre had held heritage protection status since 1965. A more positive chapter was that of the complex renovation of the historical monuments.
