After 1989, Litomyšl built for itself an enviable reputation among small Czech towns with its many new, architectonically accomplished buildings, thanks predominantly to the then mayor, Miroslav Brýdl, and the town architect Zdeňka Vydrová, both of whom considered the future appearance of the town from a long-term point of view and so set suitable rules concerning its growth. Subsequent mayors, Jan Janeček, Michal Kortyš and Radomil Kašpar, respected this tradition, as did private investors who engaged significant designers. Thanks to this, Litomyšl today has the reputation of a modern historical town which accepts the infiltration of young architectonic blood into its ancient organism.
